Why Alternators and Transformers are rating in KVA and not in KW?

Power rating of a generator and transformer is outline because the power which might be delivered by a generator and transformer safely and efficiently under some specific situation. Growing load, increases losses in generator and transformer.

As we also know, cupper loss of a generator and transformer depend upon current and iron loss on voltage. Hence, total generator and transformer loss depends on volt ampere (VA) and not on the phase angle between voltage and current. It’s independent of load power factor. That’s why rating of generator and transformers is in KVA and not kilowatt.

Although losses of generator and transformer depend on its KVA or MVA rating however actual output varies with electrical power factor. The electrical output of A generator and transformer is product of power factor and Volt Ampere and output is expressed in kilowatt. Typically alternators and transformer also are rated by its power rather than volt-ampere rating.
